World Sociology Day 2026-7
With this message, we would like to congratulate all sociologists working in university departments, research centers, associations and unions, communities, organizations, as well as in the private and public sectors, for the excellent work they carry out in the fields of sociology, research, policy, applications, and teaching.
The aim of our message is to mobilize our colleagues toward the establishment and celebration of a World Sociology Day. Although we hold some ambivalence toward international “world days,” we believe that dedicating a day to Sociology will better highlight the work of sociologists, the breadth of their interventions, and will enhance the visibility and recognition of our discipline. Moreover, it will help engage diverse social groups, communities, organizations, and individuals with our goals and values.
We propose that World Sociology Day be set on one of the following dates:
- November 14, a date already celebrated in European countries and in countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), or
- June 12, the birth date of the first woman sociologist, Harriet Martineau, or
- February 23, the birth date of the highly significant colleague W. E. B. Du Bois.
We look forward to your decisions so that we may participate in this important initiative.
With collegial regards,
On behalf of the Board of the Hellenic Sociological Association -Thessaloniki branch,
Prokopios Orfanos, President - Asimina Vlachou, General Secretary
